38374 (2024). Francisco Hernandez to the Minister of Conservation: How, if at all, are the Minister's departments, if any, currently using AI, and what plans, if any, have been developed to manage the risks associated with AI?
Hon Tama Potaka: I am advised that the Department of Conservation has formulated a generative AI (e.g. ChatGPT) usage policy and has created a process for people to request access to generative AI services. Requests are assessed on a case-by-case basis; to ensure the application meets the Department’s policy, including security and privacy requirements. This policy is in the process of being rolled out and will subsequently be extended to cover uses of other types of AI.
There is current use of AI in the Department, including experimental and day-to-day use of generative AI, use of AI/machine learning for data processing and analysis, and AI built into software systems like MegaDetector (a tool used to analyse trail camera footage for stoats, rats, possums and other pests).
The Department of Conservation is also focusing on improving its data and information management and governance, including developing new and updated policies, as a foundation for safe AI use.
