38371 (2024). Francisco Hernandez to the Minister of Climate Change: How, if at all, are the Minister's departments, if any, currently using AI, and what plans, if any, have been developed to manage the risks associated with AI?

Hon Simon Watts: I am advised that the Ministry for the Environment (the Ministry) is currently exploring the possibility of using AI for operational purposes, and is developing an Acceptable Use Policy in line with All of Government direction on the use of AI and related technologies. The Ministry are also establishing an internal AI working group with representation across the Ministry to surface and address identified risks and opportunities. I am further advised that the Ministry continues to actively participate in AI cross-agency working groups and is closely following emerging public sector guidance as it becomes available.
