Hon Kieran McAnulty to the Minister of Housing: What specific commitments, if any, were made to tenants at the time of their relocation from Kāinga Ora properties for redevelopment since December 2023, regarding their right for prioritisation of return to redeveloped sites, and how many of those commitments have been fulfilled as of July 2025, listed by location, region, date of cancellation, and number of affected tenants?

Hon Chris Bishop: Kāinga Ora – Homes and Communities advises me that when a tenant is required to move from a property as the property is needed for redevelopment, a suitable alternative property is found for the tenant. This is an opportunity to better understand the needs of the tenant and to ensure that any alternative property offered is appropriate, including location, number of bedrooms, health or disability needs. Considerable care is taken to ensure that the new home meets the needs of the tenant. In most cases, tenants are not offered the opportunity to move back into the redeveloped property, as it is likely the new properties is a different typology than their previous home on that site and may not meet their needs Any record of a commitment to rehouse a tenant in a newly redeveloped property would be held on an individual’s tenancy file. It is not possible to provide this information without diverting a significant amount of staff resources from their core duties. In accordance with Speaker’s Ruling 210/6, I consider that the time and expense of answering the Member’s question is not in the public interest.
