Tamatha Paul to the Minister of Housing: What action, if any, is the Government taking in response to the comments in the Independent Review of Kāinga Ora that "We have seen evidence that suggests social housing is not necessarily being accessed by those households who currently need it most. We have seen that, on average, current Kāinga Ora and CHP tenant populations are similar, but the population of tenants receiving the Accommodation Supplement have higher and more complex needs. At the same time, there is little incentive or ability for social housing tenants to move to more cost-effective support as their needs change"?

Hon Chris Bishop: As outlined in the response to the independent review the Government has accepted some short term recommendations such as refreshing the Kāinga Ora Board and requesting a credible plan from the Board and the other changes proposed by the review, including moving to a model where the government becomes an active purchaser that takes a social investment approach to cost-effectively improving housing outcomes, will be considered in the coming months. The remaining recommendations align with the Government’s broader social policy objectives, so will be looked at closely, as well as considering broader housing funding settings.
