Hon Jan Tinetti to the Minister of Education: Does the Minister agree with Kieran Gainsford, Vice President of PPTA, that the view of teachers across all curriculum areas is that surprising curriculum change isn't going to be lasting and effective curriculum change; and if so, does the Minister consider planned changes to the English curriculum to Year 13 as surprising curriculum change?

Hon Erica Stanford: I am confident the updates will bring lasting and effective curriculum change because evidence-based practices will be integrated into the national curriculum, providing clarity about what teaching and learning is needed at each year level from Year 0 to Year 13. The first step to ensure we get this right is to rephase the NCEA change programme, allowing time to develop a clear national curriculum for senior secondary level subjects before NCEA Levels 2 and 3 are further developed, as the sector had been requesting. I announced this step in April this year. The process of developing the national curriculum for senior secondary level subjects will provide a number of opportunities for teachers to provide feedback.
