37862 (2026). Camilla Belich to the Minister of Justice: How many individuals, if any, have been unenrolled from the 2026 electoral roll, broken down by reasons and by each electorate/roll?
Hon Paul Goldsmith: The Electoral Commission removes individuals from the electoral rolls for a number of reasons under the Electoral Act 1993 (the Act): • The Commission has been notified of the elector’s death • They are moved from the main roll to the dormant roll pursuant to sections 89G, 95A(4) or 96(4) of the Act • They are removed from the dormant roll pursuant to section 109(2)(d) of the Act • They are no longer eligible because of the time they have been outside of New Zealand • They have moved overseas and no longer want to be registered to vote for New Zealand elections, even though they are still eligible • They have been sentenced to a period of imprisonment and are not eligible under section 80(1)(d) of the Act • They are detained in a hospital or secure facility and are disqualified from registration under section 80(1)(c)(i) to (iv) of the Act • Their name is on the Corrupt Practices List under section 80(2) of the Act • The Commission is satisfied the person is not qualified to be an elector, following an objection process under section 95 or 96 of the Act I refer the Member to Table 1 attached which provided the number of individuals removed from the electoral rolls during 2026 (from 1 January to 30 August) by reasons, broken down by electorate and roll type (General and Māori). The ‘other’ reasons categories include the small number of people who are removed from the electoral rolls under section 80(1)(c), section 80 (2), section 95 and section 96 of the Act. Numbers are not included for any category where the breakdown is less than 20 electors to protect elector privacy. The electoral boundary changes were implemented in the Commission’s systems in May 2026. As the data period for this request begins before the boundary changes were implemented, electors have been assigned to the electorate applicable at the time each transaction removing them from the roll was processed, reflecting the electorate before or after the boundary changes as appropriate.
