37769 (2024). Hon Ginny Andersen to the Associate Minister of Justice: How does she think removing Te Tari Pūkere from Police will improve trust?

Hon Nicole McKee: Results from the recently published Firearms Trust and Confidence Survey show that the public level of trust and confidence in "the approach that Te Tari Pūreke - Firearms Safety Authority uses to manage firearms licencing in the community" has decreased from 66.9% in 2022 to 64.5% in 2024. I have also heard frustrations from many licenced firearms owners regarding the Firearms Safety Authority's lack of independence from New Zealand Police. I hope that transferring the Firearms Safety Authority away from Police would reverse these trends.
