37763 (2024). Dr Tracey McLellan to the Minister of Corrections: How many of the 20,000 responses to Corrections’ recruitment drive, if any, are recruit ready?

Hon Mark Mitchell: I am advised that the member’s question has been interpreted to relate to employment applications received by Corrections following its latest advertising campaign, which commenced on 4 February 2024. The recruitment process for frontline staff is typically 10-12 weeks as Corrections undertakes a rigorous recruitment process to ensure people meet the requirements for the role. This recruitment process includes multiple assessments to ensure their suitability for the role. Due to the high level of integrity required of staff working in prisons, thorough pre-employment checks must also be carried out. These include Police vetting, drug testing, a physical fitness test and medical check, and a reference check prior to employment. I am further advised that between 4 February 2024 and 12 June 2024, 43,715 applications were received and 414 appointments were made. Of these applications and appointments, 19,990 applications and 129 appointments were for Corrections Officer positions, with many more in the recruitment pipeline. The majority of the remaining appointments were for frontline positions.
