37434 (2024). Hon Willow-Jean Prime to the Associate Minister of Housing: What emergency or temporary housing services, if any, are currently provided for young people?
Hon Tama Potaka: Emergency Housing Special Needs Grants (EH SNG) are a last resort assistance for clients with an immediate housing need. The Ministry of Social Development (MSD) acknowledges every situation is different. Before granting an EH SNG, MSD case managers seek to understand where the person is currently living, how they could help them to stay there, their circumstances leading up to them presenting to MSD and what they have been doing to seek alternative accommodation. MSD can support people through things like help with rent arrears, bond, rent in advance, ongoing support with accommodation costs, housing services and Ready to Rent programmes.
