37425 (2024). Ingrid Leary to the Minister of Corrections: With regard to Reply 13274, how will the improvements in the units improve conditions within the units?

Hon Mark Mitchell: I am advised that Intervention and Support Units (ISUs) are where people in prison who are assessed as at risk of self-harm and suicide are closely monitored and have access to specialised care to support their rehabilitation to a state of wellbeing prior to returning to their mainstream prison unit, or to support them while awaiting transfer to an inpatient mental health facility. I am further advised that in support of this purpose, the planned improvements to the ISUs focus on introducing cultural, natural and sensory elements and improvements to privacy. On a site-by-site basis, this includes improvements such as upgrading flooring, coordinated painting of common space and cell walls, ceiling and lighting replacements with softer finishings, providing televisions (where safe and reasonable to do so), reducing noise, and improved natural light and outdoor spaces that are viewed from yards and windows. Staff working conditions are also important with the inclusion of upgrades to staff bases.
