37419 (2025). Rawiri Waititi to the Minister of Justice: How is the Electoral Commission applying Section 83(4) of the Electoral Act 1993, when a person does identify as Māori but does not select a roll, when this section states that if a person does not specify whether they are Māori, they are treated as non-Māori?
Hon Paul Goldsmith: I am advised a person cannot identify as Māori on either the online or paper-based enrolment form without also selecting the roll they wish to enrol on. Step 4 of the enrolment form provides the three options to applicants, which are listed below. • ‘I am of Māori descent. Please enrol me on the Māori roll.’ • ‘I am of Māori descent. Please enrol me on the general roll.’ • ‘I am not of Māori descent. (You will be enrolled on the general roll.)’
