Rt Hon Winston Peters: I was provided advice that the Government is progressing two major marine protection networks in the Hauraki Gulf and off the south-east coast of the South Island. The Hauraki Gulf Bill proposes 19 new protection areas, nearly tripling coverage. Six new reserves are planned for the South Island, through judicial review has delayed implementation. I was also advised that 31% of our EEZ is closed to bottom trawling, and the trawl footprint is regularly monitored. The Bill will further restrict bottom-impacting methods in the Hauraki Gulf. Work is underway to ratify the BBNJ Agreement, with legislation expected next year. At the third UN Ocean Conference, New Zealand made six commitments, including over NZ$150 million to support Pacific fisheries, ocean governance, and science.
