37406 (2025). Rawiri Waititi to the Minister of Justice: What is the process for determining which electoral roll a person who has identified as Māori is placed on when they enrol to vote?

Hon Paul Goldsmith: I am advised a person of Māori descent can choose the Māori roll or the general roll when they first enrol to vote. This information is collected at step 4 of the enrolment form. Step 4 provides the three options to applicants, which are listed below. • ‘I am of Māori descent. Please enrol me on the Māori roll.’ • ‘I am of Māori descent. Please enrol me on the general roll.’ • ‘I am not of Māori descent. (You will be enrolled on the general roll.)’ Māori electors can change roll type at any time except in the three months before a general election or the triennial local elections, or before a parliamentary by-election.
