37148 (2025). Francisco Hernandez to the Minister of Corrections: How many staff, if any, in headcount terms did the Minister’s departments, agencies, crown entities and any other bodies that the Minister is responsible for, if any, have on 1 July 2020 and how many of these staff, if any, were union members?
Hon Mark Mitchell: I am advised that Corrections employs around 11,000 staff, with around 90 percent of its workforce employed in frontline roles in prisons and in the community. Corrections is a highly unionised organisation, with almost 80 percent of its workforce belonging to a union.
I am further advised that Corrections works closely with unions on various initiatives to help achieve mutual priorities and positive outcomes for its staff and operations. The primary unions are the Public Service Associate (PSA), Corrections Association of New Zealand (CANZ), and the New Zealand Nurses Association (NZNO).
I refer the member to the attached table, which provides the total number of Corrections staff, and how many of these staff were union members, as at 1 July, for the years 2020 to 2025.
This is also my response to WPQ 37144 (2025), WPQ 37145 (2025), WPQ 37147 (2025), WPQ 37146 (2025), and WPQ 37149 (2025).
