37107 (2025). Teanau Tuiono to the Minister for Oceans and Fisheries: Is the Minister or their office aware of how many trawl and gillnet vessels do not have on board cameras and if so, where are they fishing?
Hon Shane Jones: Deepwater trawl vessels which fish predominantly in southern offshore waters are not required to operate onboard cameras, as they are covered by the observer programme. Cameras are also not required on small set net vessels that fish in semi-enclosed waters such as rivers, harbours, or estuaries (mainly in northern New Zealand).
