35850 (2025). Ingrid Leary to the Minister of Education: Further to Reply 33850 (2025), on what basis was the Peninsula included, and not Mosgiel?
Hon Erica Stanford: When developing and reviewing enrolment schemes, the Ministry of Education considers a number of factors, including:
• travel distance
• population density
• capacity of the school in question and that of other local schools
• geographical boundaries, such as arterial roads or rivers and any proposed housing developments in the area.
Following public consultation, Queen’s High School’s enrolment scheme home zone will include all areas that were originally proposed, with the addition of the Otago Peninsula. This decision was informed by significant feedback from the community, which showed that a strong majority supported the inclusion of the Otago Peninsula.
The Mosgiel area was not included in the enrolment zone for Queen’s High School as this would place the school at risk of overcrowding. Only a small number of consultation responses advocated for Mosgiel in the enrolment zone.
