35848 (2025). Ingrid Leary to the Minister of Housing: Further to Reply 33394 (2025), in which city was the unrenewed Kainga Ora property located; why has Kainga Ora decided not to renew the lease?

Hon Chris Bishop: Kāinga Ora - Homes and Communities advises me that the privately owned property was located in Dunedin. The Kāinga Ora supported housing portfolio contains a small number of homes leased from private owners, which in turn are made available to service providers for supported housing. Kāinga Ora has decided not to renew the lease as it makes more commercial sense for Kāinga Ora to own the properties they use for supported housing, as often they require modifications to make them suitable for the people living there which is easier to make if Kāinga Ora own the property. Kāinga Ora explored purchasing the property, but due to a number of factors, including it being in a flood zone, it did not meet the required standards to acquire.
