Hon Jo Luxton to the Minister for Biosecurity: What scientific advice does MPI hold on the taxonomic status of Anastrepha fraterculus as a species complex, and whether this was considered in setting Schedule 2 treatment requirements in the IHS for Fresh Blueberries for Human Consumption?

Hon Andrew Hoggard: I am advised that the Ministry for Primary Industries is aware of the taxonomic complexity and existence of different morphotypes within Anastrepha fraterculus species complex. The irradiation treatment proposed in Schedule 2 is from ISPM 28, Annexe 39, which is applicable to the entire Anastrepha genus and thus covers all members of Anastrepha fraterculus species complex.
