35336 (2025). Dr Lawrence Xu-Nan to the Minister of Education: How many years of curriculum change in total have schools been subject to by the end of 2025?
Hon Erica Stanford: Since December 2017, the Ministry of Education has been working with the sector to strengthen the national curriculum for schooling, the New Zealand Curriculum (NZC) and Te Marautanga o Aotearoa (TMoA), so that it is clear what should be taught and when, to reduce teacher workload and provide for students to progress and achieve. The NZC and TMoA were updated from 2019-2022 to include Aotearoa New Zealand’s histories and Te Takanga o Te Wā. This curriculum content has been required for schools and kura to use since the start of 2023. The updated English and Te Reo Rangatira Years 0-6 and mathematics & statistics and Pāngarau Years 0-8 curricula was gazetted in late 2024 and has been required for schools and kura to use from the beginning of 2025.
