Hon Peeni Henare to the Prime Minister: Why did he describe a letter from the United Nations special rapporteur on the rights of indigenous peoples as "total bunkum" and a "waste of time" just after he "made it clear" to his Regulations Minister that it was the responsibility of the Foreign Affairs Minister to respond to the letter?

Rt Hon Christopher Luxon: My comments of 15 July were in reaction to the allegations the UN Special Rapporteur was passing along. As I have said, the Foreign Minister will coordinate the Government’s substantive response to the UN Special Rapporteur’s letter with other Ministerial colleagues. This will be provided by the August deadline and will then be a matter of public record. That will constitute the Government’s formal position on the letter.
