34825 (2026). Francisco Hernandez to the Minister of Health: What public engagement surveys, if any, are planned or currently underway regarding the use of artificial intelligence in the Minister’s departments, agencies, crown entities and any other bodies that the Minister is responsible for, if any?
Hon Simeon Brown: I am advised the Ministry of Health is not currently undertaking or have planned any public engagement surveys regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI). Any future use of AI by the Ministry would be considered in accordance with relevant government policy, privacy, security, and regulatory requirements, and appropriate engagement activities would be undertaken where required. I am further advised that Health New Zealand’s National Artificial Intelligence and Algorithm Expert Advisory Group (NAIAEAG) guides and endorses AI projects and research involving Health New Zealand. NAIAEAG is informed by a programme of research exploring public and patient views on AI. This research involves focus groups and interviews. Additionally, HealthX, Health New Zeland's national programme for identifying, evaluating, and scaling innovations and responsible AI solutions across clinical and operational settings, undertook a public engagement survey regarding its use of AI Scribe in Emergency Departments. This survey is still ongoing and remains open.
