34770 (2025). Hon Dr Ayesha Verrall to the Associate Minister of Health: What findings or recommendations from any report or investigation prompted the December 2017 regulatory action by Medsafe requesting suppliers to withdraw mesh products for pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and a mini-sling for stress urinary incontinence (SUI)?
Hon Casey Costello: I am advised that Medsafe was sufficiently concerned about the safety of some surgical mesh devices to write to the companies supplying these devices requesting safety information, as per the provision in section 38 of the Medicines Act 1981. This concern came from reviewing adverse events reported to Medsafe and information supplied by overseas regulators.
