34140 (2025). Francisco Hernandez to the Minister responsible for the NZSIS: How, if at all, is AI profiling and/or facial recognition used in the Minister's departments, agencies, crown entities and any other bodies that the Minister is responsible for, if any?

Hon Judith Collins: As a security and intelligence agency, the NZSIS needs to be careful about what operational and technological details it reveals about its work. I can therefore neither confirm nor deny whether the agency is using AI profiling and/or facial recognition. I would note however that any use of AI by the NZSIS would reflect its legislative responsibilities and ethical standards, and be subject to the agency’s robust oversight.
