34114 (2026). Francisco Hernandez to the Minister of Police

34114 (2026). Francisco Hernandez to the Minister of Police: What algorithm impact assessments, if any, have been done in the Minister’s departments, agencies, crown entities and any other bodies that the Minister is responsible for, if any, since 27 November 2023?
Hon Mark Mitchell: I am advised that before the Algorithm Impact Assessment (AIA) was developed under the Algorithm Charter for Aotearoa New Zealand, Police had already established a Technology Assurance Framework to govern the assessment and use of policing technologies, including algorithms developed internally and by third parties.
Because of this, since November 2023, Police has assessed a number of technologies through its Technology Assurance Framework, which incorporates standards for algorithm development and use, rather than the AIA process.
Information regarding Police technology capabilities is publicly available via a Technology Capability List, most recently updated in October 2025. The List is available at: https://www.police.govt.nz/about-us/programmes-and-initiatives/police-use-emergent-technologies/technology-capabilities-list
The Serious Fraud Office has a 'Use of Artificial Intelligence Policy' which governs how AI may be used, and when a use case or Impact Assessment approval process is required. No AI automation use case projects have been proposed yet which would require a full algorithm impact assessment.
