34086 (2026). Francisco Hernandez to the Minister of Internal Affairs: What procurement process, if any, was used for purchasing artificial intelligence tools, if any, currently being used within the Minister’s departments, agencies, crown entities and any other bodies that the Minister is responsible for, if any?
Hon Brooke van Velden: Department of Internal Affairs:
I am advised by the Department that a limited number of artificial intelligence tools have been procured through All of Government Panels or existing product offerings.
Classification Office:
I am advised that the Classification Office has not directly purchased Artificial Intelligence tools.
The Classification Office uses a wide range of subscription-based services that incorporate artificial intelligence functionality. This includes Copilot, which is embedded within Microsoft products including SharePoint, Outlook, Teams, and Windows Defender, as well as security systems, finance applications, and more specialised applications. The AI component in these items is not separable.
Lotto New Zealand:
I am advised by Lotto NZ that no specific procurement process is used for artificial intelligence (AI) tools. However, any AI tool purchased is subject to an established AI risk assessment process before procurement begins.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand:
I am advised that Fire and Emergency accesses artificial intelligence (AI) features via existing licensing agreements, therefore, an additional AI-specific procurement process was not required.
