33750 (2025). Hon Dr Duncan Webb to the Minister of Corrections: Does the Chief Executive or other senior Corrections employee give dispensations for remand prisoners to mix with non-remand prisoners; if so how many such dispensations have been given?
Hon Mark Mitchell: Section 186 of the Corrections Regulations 2005 states that accused prisoners and other prisoners may be mixed if the Chief Executive provides approval under exceptional circumstances. I am advised that authority to approve the mixing of remand and non-remand prisoners is currently delegated to Corrections’ Director Prison Capacity & Planning.
I am advised that there are currently 13 approvals in effect to mix remand accused prisoners with other prisoners across seven prisons and multiple units. Additionally, approval is currently in effect for five specific individual remand accused prisoners to mix with others.
