33009 (2025). Hon Rachel Brooking to the Minister for the Environment: Does she agree with the CEO of GasNZ who said the Government’s decision to abandon a nationwide mandate for kerbside food scraps had rattled investor confidence, and what evidence, by title and date, is this based on?
Hon Penny Simmonds: I do not agree. The Government is not mandating kerbside food scraps collections but continues to support councils through targeted investment in infrastructure and technology via the Waste Minimisation Fund. Councils may apply for funding to establish or improve food and green waste collection services. This approach supports local decision-making while reducing pressure on households and ratepayers. I have not seen evidence—by title or date—substantiating the claim that this decision has materially rattled investor confidence.
