33002 (2025). Hon Rachel Brooking to the Minister for the Environment: Does she consider the Government’s decision to abandon a nationwide mandate for kerbside food scraps to align with cost of living pressures, and if so, how?

Hon Penny Simmonds: While I support the aim of improving household recycling, I do not consider a mandatory approach that will place additional costs on councils the right approach at this time. The Government is supporting councils through targeted investment in infrastructure and technology via the Waste Minimisation Fund. Councils may apply for funding to establish or improve food and green waste collection services.
