32984 (2025). Debbie Ngarewa-Packer to the Minister of Science, Innovation and Technology: What steps, if any, is the Minister taking to ensure that Māori-led research is funded in a manner consistent with Te Tiriti o Waitangi obligations and Māori aspirations for research sovereignty?

Hon Dr Shane Reti: I am advised that the Vision Mātauranga policy is the main policy used to grow Māori capacity and Māori-related research in the Science, Innovation and Technology (SIT) portfolio and is a feature across most of the SIT funds. Māori-led research is regularly funded in competitive grants based on the competitive strength of their proposals, as is the case for all who wish to pursue research aspirations.
