32228 (2025). Tamatha Paul to the Minister of Justice: When, if ever, will the Minister commission a human rights impact assessment in relation to the reinstatement of the prisoner voting ban?
Hon Paul Goldsmith: Ministry of Justice officials provided advice on human rights implications in relation to the prisoner voting disqualification as part of the Cabinet decision-making process. The Attorney General will also assess the relevant legislative provisions for consistency with the New Zealand Bill of Rights Act 1990, pursuant to Section 7 of that Act, and Standing Order 269. If the Attorney-General finds any inconsistency with the New Zealand Bill of Rights Act 1990, they are required to indicate this to the House at Introduction, pursuant to Standing Order 269(2)(a).
