32157 (2025). Ingrid Leary to the Minister for Mental Health: What are the annual training entitlements for Psychiatrists, training days, and associated costs with training days?
Hon Matt Doocey: I am advised that psychiatrists are provided with continuing medical education under clause 36.2 of the Senior Medical Officer Collective Agreement, which provides:
• Leave for 10 working days (pro rata for part-time employees) each financial year, plus any agreed reasonable travelling time.
• SMOs can carry over any unused leave days (not exceeding 30 days).
• SMOs are provided with an annual CME allowance of $16,000 (reimbursement of actual and reasonable expenses), this can accumulate as above.
• An additional $500 for SMOs enrolled in two or more Maintenance Of Professional Standards (MOPS) programmes is also provided.
I am further advised that:
• SMOs are able to access secondments of two weeks every three years to a recognised unit or posting for the purpose of professional development and upgrading skills which is relevant to their duties and responsibilities.
• SMOs can access fully paid sabbaticals of three month (or other agreed period) after every six years of service.
• SMOs may also receive paid leave to participate in leadership programme, courses, conference and other activities to support this area of development.
