32153 (2025). Teanau Tuiono to the Minister for Oceans and Fisheries: Does the Minister think it’s worth weakening the protections in the Hauraki Gulf established through a multi-stakeholder working group over a decade for less than $14k/year of revenue from ring-net fishers and if so, what sort of cost/benefit analysis if any did he rely on to back up this decision?
Hon Shane Jones: Ring net fishing will be carefully managed through a number of conditions in order to support the livelihoods of a small number of fishers, and will only be provided for in three percent of the total area protected under Hauraki Gulf / Tīkapa Moana Marine Protection Bill. I do not believe this will have negative biodiversity impacts and am confident this provision balances the needs of communities, the environment and the economy.
