31518 (2025). Hon Dr Deborah Russell to the Minister of Revenue: What is the expected loss of revenue, if any, from Inland Revenue accepting a review when/if an advisor makes an error?
Hon Simon Watts: Officials advise that there is no expected loss of revenue. The advisor must satisfy Inland Revenue during the approval process that the review will be carried out to a similar standard as an Inland Revenue review. It is possible that Inland Revenue may make a similar error in similar circumstances, so the overall result is expected to be the same. Tax technical positions taken by the customer are not covered under the participating advisor initiative so the Commissioner of Inland Revenue is not limited by the initiative in his ability to reassess any errors when they are identified.
