31233 (2025). Tamatha Paul to the Minister of Corrections: Will prisoner labour will be used on any of the proposed prison expansions, if so, will the prisoners be compensated financially and how much?
Hon Mark Mitchell: Further to my response to WPQ 19239 (2025), I am advised that Corrections expects prisoners will engage in work on the construction of the Waikeria Prison expansion through the Release to Work programme, where they are paid at a market rate determined by a third-party employer. I am further advised that there are no plans to use prisoner labour on the construction of the Christchurch Men’s Prison expansion.
