Hon Andrew Hoggard: The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) identified the pests and diseases that might be associated with fresh blueberries as part of the risk assessment process. I am advised that details of the risk assessment process can be found on the following webpage: https://www.mpi.govt.nz/consultations/proposed-import-requirements-for-fresh-blueberries-vaccinium-spp-for-human-consumption. The webpage also includes the draft import health standard, which sets out all the requirements that are proposed to be put in place to manage the risks from pests and diseases offshore. Imports can only commence once the exporting country and MPI have agreed on a bilateral arrangement confirming how the import requirements will be met. New Zealand’s ability to protect itself from harmful pests and diseases and maintain access to export markets depends on applying a consistent, evidence-based approach to both imports and exports in accordance with our international obligations. This consistency is a fundamental part of how we protect our long-term interests as a trading nation.
