30886 (2025). Hon Kieran McAnulty to the Associate Minister of Housing: What systems are in place to monitor whether families leaving Rotorua emergency housing are transitioning into stable, secure, and affordable accommodation, if any, and has he received any data on outcomes?
Hon Tama Potaka: I am advised by the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) that they currently record, analyse and report on emergency housing (EH) exits at a national level, which shows that during December 2024 37 percent left EH to go into Social Housing, 29 percent had moved into Transitional Housing, 19 percent were receiving the Accommodation Supplement for a private rental.
After leaving EH and households are under no obligation to tell MSD where they are moving to. MSD needs to balance the requirement to monitor the effectiveness of its interventions with the need to respect individuals’ reasonable right to privacy. MSD does not currently report EH exits at a regional or location level, though I am advised it hopes to develop that capacity in the future.
