30826 (2025). Hon Peeni Henare to the Minister for Media and Communications: How is the responsibility for spectrum management distributed across government agencies and the NZDF, and what mechanisms, if any, exist to ensure coordinated responses to incidents like that in the Tasman Sea on 4 June 2025?
Hon Paul Goldsmith: Officials at MBIE are responsible for the Radiocommunications Act 1989, and the Government’s spectrum management function. However, some responsibility for specific uses of spectrum is held by agencies such as Te Puni Kōkiri, Ministry for Culture and Heritage, and the New Zealand Defence Force. MBIE officials have contacts with each agency whom they communicate and coordinate with when responding to incidents.
