30821 (2025). Hon Peeni Henare to the Minister for Media and Communications: What policies currently govern the allocation and protection of radio spectrum for rural internet providers, and how effective have they been in preventing service disruptions from external interference?
Hon Paul Goldsmith: Radio Spectrum Management’s Public Information Brochures 38, 39 and 58, 59 and the General User Radio Licences provide the licensing policy and technical rules for access to radio spectrum that rural internet providers commonly use. The technical rules are intended to manage interference. Interference issues do occur from time to time if a party does not follow the technical rules. MBIE employs Radio Spectrum Investigators to investigate and resolve claims of interference.
