30808 (2023). Hon Dr Megan Woods to the Minister for Resources: In relation to Reply 30036 (2023), what information and data, if any, does he or his officials have on the volume of coal held in New Zealand?

Hon Shane Jones: In addition to the information held in Annual Summary Reports from each individual permit or licence holder as referred to in Reply 30036 (2023), the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment monitors changes in stocks of coal held in New Zealand. Coal statistics are available from the MBIE website here: https://www.mbie.govt.nz/building-and-energy/energy-and-natural-resources/energy-statistics-and-modelling/energy-statistics/coal-statistics/ Stocks refer to fuel that has already been produced but has not been supplied to or used by consumers in a given period. The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment monitors changes in coal stocks on a quarterly basis using two main sources: • Surveys of major New Zealand coal mine owners and operators, and • Information from other companies that hold stocks of coal, such as Genesis Energy. Information on Genesis Energy’s coal stockpile is also published on its website.
