30783 (2025). Hon Jenny Salesa to the Minister of Customs: What advice did the Minister receive, if any, about the fiscal and enforcement consequences of recent job cuts on Customs’ role in detecting illegal tobacco importation?

Hon Casey Costello: I have not received any advice from the New Zealand Customs Service (Customs) regarding the fiscal and enforcement impacts of recent organisational changes on Customs’ role in detecting illegal tobacco importation. Customs made organisational changes in a careful, deliberate way to deliver on the Government’s priorities without affecting Customs' ability to deliver services and critical support functions, while also managing cost pressures.
