30619 (2023). Hon Dr Duncan Webb to the Minister of Justice: Is the Minister committed to giving greater weight to the needs of victims and communities over offenders only in respect of sentencing (as set out in the coalition agreements, or will that be his approach across the whole portfolio?

Hon Paul Goldsmith: The interests of victims are a paramount concern for all criminal justice policy development but is a particular focus for sentencing reform.  As a starting point, the Government is focused on:  - reducing the number of victims of crime; - implementing a different approach to sentencing which achieves real accountability for victims of serious crime, including youth crime; and   - speeding up the court system.   A more balanced sentencing framework will provide a greater sense of justice for victims and send a clear message that serious crimes have serious consequences.  From there, the Government will consider a range of practical, evidence-based initiatives that promote positive outcomes for victims. Details of any initiatives for victims will be announced when appropriate.
