30612 (2023). Hon Dr Duncan Webb to the Minister of Justice: Is it the Minister’s view that New Zealand’s justice system should be victims centric, if so, what are his priorities for ensuring a victim centric justice system?

Hon Paul Goldsmith: This Government is committed to ensuring victims are placed at the heart of our justice system. As a starting point, the Government is focused on:  - reducing the number of victims of crime ; - implementing a different approach to sentencing which achieves real accountability for victims of serious crime, including youth crime; and   - speeding up the court system . From there, the Government will consider a range of practical, evidence-based initiatives that promote positive outcomes for victims, while also allowing for a fair process for alleged offenders.
