30586 (2023). Steve Abel to the Associate Minister of Agriculture: What methods, if any, are used to kill dairy cows including bobby calves?
Hon Andrew Hoggard: I am advised that the Animal Welfare Act 1999 (the Act) is the principal legislation on animal welfare in New Zealand. The Act makes it an offence to kill an animal in a way that causes unreasonable or unnecessary pain or distress.
I refer the member to The Code of Welfare: Commercial Slaughter, which contains minimum standards and recommended best practices for humane slaughter, including bobby calves, and The Code of Welfare: Dairy Cattle, which contains minimum standards and recommended best practices for emergency humane destruction, including bobby calves.
