30300 (2026). Hon Kieran McAnulty to the Associate Minister of Housing: What data, if any, do officials hold on unrecorded housing need arising from declined or discouraged emergency housing applications?

Hon Tama Potaka: I am advised that the Ministry of Social Development does not hold any data on unrecorded housing need arising from declined emergency housing applications. The Ministry does not discourage clients from applying for emergency housing, and staff assess those who apply. If it is clear that a client can be supported to sustain their current accommodation or moved into a suitable alternative, then Ministry staff will do this as required by the gateway policy.
