30290 (2023). Hon Dr Megan Woods to the Minister for Energy: What actions, if any, is the Government taking to improve the resilience of New Zealand's electricity system ahead of Winter 2024?
Hon Simeon Brown: I have received some initial advice on the risks to New Zealand’s electricity system ahead of Winter 2024 and I intend to progress work on this matter as a priority, working with Transpower and the Electricity Authority.
As part of our 100-day plan, I am progressing work on a National Policy Statement for Renewable Electricity Generation to make it easier to consent wind, solar and geothermal projects.
I have also axed the Lake Onslow pumped hydro scheme, which industry experts warned could have a chilling effect on the pipeline of renewable electricity generation in New Zealand.
Together, these actions will give industry certainty in the direction the Government is heading and greater confidence to invest in more energy production in New Zealand.
