Arena Williams to the Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs: Why did it take the Government until June 2026 to announce that it would be mandatory for new corded window coverings to meet internationally recognised safety standards, when MBIE consulted on mandatory safety requirements for corded blinds in 2023?

Cameron Brewer: Following consultation, MBIE considered the submissions received and undertook further policy analysis to support a robust decision. The Government announced the decision in June 2026 after Cabinet agreed to introduce mandatory internationally recognised safety standards for new corded window coverings.
