30035 (2023). Hon Dr Megan Woods to the Minister for Resources: What environmental risks does the Minister believe are posed by seabed mining, if any?

Hon Shane Jones: I have not been provided with any advice on environmental risks posed by seabed mining. The Crown Minerals Act 1991 permitting process is focussed on the allocation of rights to prospect, explore and mine Crown-owned minerals. It works alongside other legislation such as the Resource Management Act 1991 and the Exclusive Economic Zone and Continental Shelf (Environmental Effects) Act 2012, which regulate the environmental aspects of mining activities.
