30011 (2023). Hon Dr Megan Woods to the Minister for Resources: Does the Minister agree with Palau's President, Surangel Whipps Jr, who said: "New Zealand as a Pacific Island and a member of the forum should take a leadership role and should be active in doing all they can to transition away from fossil fuels. That's what they should be working on," and if so, why is his government restarting new offshore oil and gas exploration?

Hon Shane Jones: New Zealand has a role to play in the global effort to address climate change. Gas is an important transition fuel for maintaining New Zealand’s energy security while we electrify our economy. Dependence on imports erodes our security and increases our emissions. We are acting to avoid that.
