29920 (2025). Lan Pham to the Minister of Conservation: What management actions, if any, to halt human induced extinction of known threatened species is the Government looking to put in place?
Hon Tama Potaka: The Department of Conservation implements various actions to prevent the extinction of threatened species.
These efforts include:
• Direct management of species and habitats
• Monitoring of pests, weeds, species, and habitats
• Animal pest and weed control
• Fire management
• Biosecurity
• Managing interactions between wildlife and humans
• Advocacy for protection
• Research and tool development
Furthermore, the Department is implementing BioInvest to ensure resources are allocated effectively to protect biodiversity and prevent irreversible loss.
This approach includes developing and prioritising management plans detailing the actions needed to protect over 4,000 species that are threatened with extinction or at risk of becoming threatened without intervention.
