29600 (2025). Hon Kieran McAnulty to the Minister of Housing: What process, if any, is followed by Kāinga Ora to decide which state houses it will sell?
Hon Chris Bishop: Kāinga Ora – Homes and Communities advises me that as part of its asset management strategy, regular assessments are done across their portfolio to look for asset renewal opportunities. If assets meet the criteria referred to in WPQ 19261 (2025), then those assets will be identified as having potential for future divestment. The timing of when an asset is divested is determined by a number of considerations, including but not limited to: • whether the property is vacated or is soon to be vacated • the level of maintenance that may have been incurred in previous years • the tenants currently occupying the property and their circumstances • the number of Kāinga Ora properties that may be on the market in close proximity • whether there is a Right of First Refusal covenant on the property.
